Trip Overview

Upper Dolpo trek is one of the best trek in Nepal that brings you so close to the mystical land where age-old Buddhist culture and Bonpo religion interweaves seamlessly and are still the part of daily life. The majestic landscapes and the incredible architectural masterpiece of this region will leave you speechless. Trekking to Upper Dolpo was restricted until 1989, so it remains a highly preserved area in terms of culture, tradition, and lifestyle. The geography, culture and religion ugly resemble that of Tibet.

Upper Dolpo trail takes you to Shey Gompa, which is widely known as the spiritual hub of Upper Dolpo. Dolpo region nestled amidst of Tibetan plateau and the Dhaulagiri massifs is one of the highest inhabited settlements of western Nepal. This magical place is situated at the base of Crystal Mountain. Crystal mountain is the sacred site visited by hundreds of thousand pilgrim who circumambulates (Kora) around the mountain. Furthermore, the quaint villages, cultural people and unusual landscapes you encounter during the trek are a memorable part of your life.

Upper Dolpo trek is quite strenuous so you need to be physically and mentally prepared prior to the trail. The crossing of three high passes Nagdalo La (5,350m), Shey La (5,010m) and Jeng La (5,220m) might be challenging for novice trekkers. Usually, the crossing concerns long ascents and descents. Upper Dolpo is one of the restricted areas in Nepal; you need to pay USD 500 for the first 10 days and USD 50 for each additional day to obtain the permit for entrance in the region.
